    ViViD will disband

not a big fan of their releases after 「夢」 ~ムゲンノカナタ~ but still really sad to see them go, if only because they were one of my biggest obsessions in 2009-2010. i still remember skipping school just to take a train down to suburban Osaka to get an autographed poster on release day XD now if they can come together and start "from the beginning" (as their latest double A-side suggests) i'll be happy to back them again

Got a box of records in the mail yesterday - yay! Couple of duds as usual, but here are the keepers: Plugging a few more holes in my collection of 90:s VK compilations with "Zeroism" and "Turn Over Peacock Version". Neither are super-essential or anything, but what the hell... gotta catch 'em all "今夜 Goodnight Tonight" is a mild ass bomb! Hard-hitting power pop with some definitive sleazy bar vibes. Nounashi approved, of course! This was released with two covers, I think the one I've got is the more common one. FIGHTING CORPORATION BAND is, like so many others, yet another Nounashi recommendation. Hard to describe really ...catchy as hell, but also pretty fucking stupid at the same time. SEIEI JACK (or SEXEI JACK EXHIBITION or THE JOKE PROJECT ...impossible to tell which is the proper band name) is utterly demented. Sounds like a japanese take on THE RESIDENTS circa "Third Reich 'n Roll" but sloppier and (possibly) even weirder. WHOOPEE! is post-ロンメル (not to be confused with the metal band). Details here: http://blog.livedoor.jp/nounashi/archives/1964751.html Really, really good bubblegum pop with vocoders and synth toms! Way better than expected. Together with SEIEI JACK one of the best blind buys in quite a while! And finally, I mustered up the balls and cash to splurge out for a looooooong time want of mine.... 十万馬力 - "Medical Mystery Tour"!!!   Very rare private press, looks like the band was a bunch of students or something. I like to think they were a bunch of medical students (hence the name) who got together and just recorded a record for the hell of it. But yeah, I don't really know anything about the group at all - except that they totally shred!! All kinds of songs ...scorching lo-fi punk, straight ahead power pop rockers, semi-ballads that morph into a guitar fuzz fest. It's all very shambolic and trebly and homemade and underproduced... and.. and.. completely wonderful ~♫

    Last movie you saw.

Gone Girl - really well made movie with a plot that keeps getting more and more ridiculously infuriating as it goes on. It brings to light how the media spins people's emotions during tragedy and how easy it is for people to use this to their advantage. Plus, Ben Affleck looks great in it, but that's not really the point of the movie... Neil Patrick Harris seems to be very bloody in 2014.

I have no ill-will towards Arlequin. Even if they are somewhat formulaic, I have enjoyed their releases and like that they bring the heavy sound with their efforts. As I have said before though, I hate chorus only previews, and this didn't get me excited because of that. Show me the other parts of the song that give it some character.

I knew about them since they released Take-off, and their disband is very sad news. They were incredible in visual kei era, but for me their music changed since BLUE, and from that time they're not the same band anymore. Latest releases were ok, but nothing special.

    Tokami - Luminescence

Another Starwave Records Release. I follow Tokami since they joined Starwave Records, but I felt in love with them at 2012/07/13 after seeing them live. This is their first release with guitarist and composer Kazuha and because of him they have improved their music even more. CD tracklist 01. Addicted Lover 02. Sayonara no Hate ni Ame ha furite 03. Luminescence For me it aren't songs to headbang on but more to dance very wild. However the first song also let me think a bit of dieS album "VICTIM". All 3 songs are wild and fast. Heavy rock feeling but totally no headbang feeling for myself (which will be different for many I guess ) All 3 songs have a similar way of melody they really fit each other to play this single over and over again. \Agato's voice has truly improved if you compare it with their last mini-album. It also let me think a bit of "CELL" mix of dieS and CELL. I don't really know what to write more about this single. I really like this single. I will buy this single on a CD soon enough. because its worth the money. If it was maybe a bit more Heavy I would have given it 5 stars Well check it out HERE

HAL's voice is gd enough to produce the intensity this kind of music needs without the need for all the fake scars and unnecessary "hey look, we're dark and br00tal now" implements. hopefully they aren't doing it just because others are doing it ;<

    #23: BLOODSUCKERS by VAMPS

Artist: VAMPS Album: BLOODSUCKERS Score: VAMPS make a good effort, but could use a little more bite. I'm a huge fan of KAZ's work with Oblivion Dust though I've never been big on L'Arc-en-Ciel or HYDE's solo ventures. Over the years I've come to realize that may have had more to do with my preference for aggressive music than the band's quality of songwriting. So, BLOODSUCKERS is only the second album I've ever heard all the way through with HYDE as the main vocalist, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. It was naive of me not to have prepared myself for high levels of cheesiness, since the song titles on this album range from spooky undead to pirate themes, but there were a lot of shockingly good moments on this album too. The first half of this album comes off a little weak. "ZERO" is a nice blend of KAZ and HYDE's styles but begins to grate on me after about 2 minutes in, where it felt like they ran out of ideas so they just dragged the song out as if it were a live situation. Only that answer works solely in a live setting. Otherwise, it's just a waste of time that should have been shortened to an intro. "LIPS" also becomes a little boring as well, even though I do appreciate a good 80s glam rock throwback, the song feels flat and lacks the raw vocal edge necessary to pull it off. HYDE stays in this middle space that never goes full grit or full soaring powerhouse. "AHEAD," "GHOST," and "VAMPIRE'S LOVE" all end up in similar bland categories. KAZ puts on a good show with "EVIL," and it's the one saving grace for the album's slow start. The song separates itself with a more industrial feel and a prominent drum beat. HYDE also sounds a little darker in his approach and doesn't try to overpower the music with belting too much just for the sake of it. BLOODSUCKERS does finally kick into gear by the mid-way point, however. The first promising HYDE composition, "DAMNED" is a punch to the gut and has great dynamics; with a haunting verse that slowly swells to the point that the listener is itching for the chorus's outcry. The guitars really wail on the track and it kicks up to headbang-worthy levels of pounding drums. It's followed by "GET AWAY" and "REPLAY," which were strong singles for the album, but also a step into the pop-influenced side of VAMPS. While not bad songs, they feel lost in the track placement. The first half of the album could have certainly used these songs to beef it up instead of the slower numbers VAMPS opted for. The title interlude was a monster of a piece that I would have loved as a full song, "are you all bloodsuckers?!" the track asks, and the answer to that is a resounding, "yes!" If you ask with that beastly guitar riff backing you up. "THE JOLLY ROGER" doesn't skimp on crunchy guitar riffs either, though it's a slight letdown to have such a positive sounding song after such a dark teaser. But once you accept the song for it's change in theme, it's actually a great piece of work and you will find yourself singing along with the "whoo hoo" of the backing vocals all too easily. The album sends us off with the closing track, "INSIDE MYSELF." It's just as well composed as any of the singles and the album releases its grip on you with a song that really expresses what the band's sound is about. The guitar work is just as catchy as any of the vocal melodies and the production is well polished as you'd expect from industry veterans like this. While some of the songs rest too much on clichéd writing tropes, it's hard to find anything unlistenable on BLOODSUCKERS. HYDE and KAZ have been writing music long enough to put out quality work that shows more of their strengths than weaknesses. But there is still a lot left to this project that they could explore and I'm looking forward to it in their future releases. I recommend rock fans to give this album a spin, VAMPS cover a lot of ground on BLOODSUCKERS so there's high likelihood they'll surprise you too.
