Who the fuck decided that for architecture or design to be "modern", it has to have no curves or intricate decorations, and has to be completely made up of straight lines and right angles?

Much of that comes from standardization as an adaptation strategy to the industrial revolution. It's so much easier to manage quality and at the same time drive down costs on something highly standardized and stripped of any decorations. This informs people's sense of style as well. And the final step is that the customer is rarely willing to pay extra for something intricate and bespoke when a readymade solution costs a fraction.
