Was driving around listening to Cassis getting excited for Gazette's NYC show in a couple weekends.... thought I'd record some thoughts. Let me know what you think of this (old) Gazette single! (shoutout to Jrocknyc shoutboxer Ken who made a few videos like this about old school Nagoya Kei that were fun... I couldn't find any of them anymore though.)
  2. Scarlet Horizon (metalcore/deathcore visual kei band from China)'s vocalist ZERO will depart the band due to undisclosed reasons. They are currently searching for a new vocalist.
  3. Does anybody know a website/websites for buying Tanbi Kei clothing (Versailles-style)? I've seen some sites but they don't sell male clothing (the Versailels prince-like/fantasy style). Also, I can't even really find female Tanbi Kei clothes. It's mostly just classical/gothic lolita, which isn't exactly what I want. Do you guys know some websites for Tanbi Kei clothes (Versailles' style)?

  6. Okay people, so as you all know, I enjoy uploading a good amount of VK. In my time, I have managed to upload some stuff from the precursors of VK to the very present. What I would like to know though... is which era of VK is YOUR favorite?? Now just to make a few things clear: - The eras are absolutely NOT definitive, meaning that the bands I chose to represent the eras on here are just from their popularity at the time, as well as reflecting the attitude I think is appropriate for the time period. - Yes, I KNOW THERE ARE MORE BANDS THAT CAN FIT/REPRESENT THE TIME-PERIOD. For the sake of time though, I only chose five of each category/choice. Mainly because it's 7AM and my parents are confused as why I'm still awake. With that all out of the way, I ask YOU fellow MH-heads: which era of VK is YOUR favorite? Which wave are you on?? PRE-WAVE aka THE PRECURSORS!! (circa 1984~1988) ~D'ERLANGER~ ~Uchoten (有頂天)~ ~BUCK-TICK~ ~Kinniku Shojo Tai (筋肉少女帯)~ ~ZIGGY~ THE FIRST WAVE (circa 1988~1993) ~X JAPAN~ ~COLOR~ ~BY-SEXUAL~ ~Kamaitachi (かまいたち)~ ~LUNA SEA~ THE SECOND WAVE (circa 1993~1997) ~Kuroyume (黒夢)~ ~GLAY~ ~L'Arc~en~Ciel~ ~MALICE MIZER~ ~LAREINE~ THE THIRD WAVE (circa 1997 through 2001) ~SHAZNA~ ~La'cryma Christi~ ~FANATIC CRISIS~ ~PIERROT~ ~Dir en grey~ THE FOURTH WAVE (circa 2001~2005) ~Psycho le Cemu~ ~MUCC~ ~An Cafe~ ~the GazettE~ ~SID (シド)~ THE FIFTH WAVE (circa 2005~2010) ~Kagrra~ ~D~ ~Phantasmagoria~ ~Megamasso (メガマソ)~ ~Versailles~ THE SIXTH WAVE (circa 2010~2013) ~DOG inTHE PWO~ ~SCREW~ ~Kiryu (己龍)~ ~NOCTURNAL BLOODLUST~ ~Golden Bomber (ゴールデンボンバー)~ THE SEVENTH WAVE aka THE CURRENT-GRADUATING WAVE (circa 2013~2017) ~MEJIBRAY~ ~DEZERT~ ~AvelCain~ ~D.I.D.~ ~DADAROMA~

So it's end of the year best-of list time, and I wanted to get involved... but I realized with more and more streaming of music rather than mp3s, and more and more me being lazy and not really listening to as much new stuff as I should: my best of 2016 list would be incomplete and hard to make because what I've been listening to isn't as easily organized by year in Spotify. But I'm a narcissist who still wanted to get in on the fun and write *something* so I decided to highlight some of my favorite, or at least notable for one reason or another, looks from the VK world in 2016. Visual is in the name after all! I know hipsters, such as myself, say that the looks don't matter and it's all about the music, man... but I'll freely admit even though I'm not looking at a picture of the band for 98% of my listening to them, the aesthetics matter and part of the reason I like VK is that I enjoy looking at pretty boys in elaborate costumes rather than bearded dudes in black tshirts. With that in mind here is my partially tongue-in-cheek but also I seriously thought about it 10 Notable VK Looks of 2016: Garak’s Vocalist ジュリ I call this the James Dean x Jesus. Insanity Injection Vocalist Kyouka Because of that YouTubers react video, this look may be the VK shot heard ‘round the world. “Looks like Kerrigan” is pretty accurate shorthand for Kyouka’s possessed crab/snake cannibal spirit costume that is almost elaborate enough to explain what the hell he’s been doing for the last ten years. ペンタゴン Bassist Minpha The kawaii-ness is undisputed around these parts… I’m embracing dark Minpha and his crown of demonic scallop shells. 乙女国家 Band I know it’s a VK trope, but I seriously like it when band members all pick a different color and just commit. I’m never going to learn their names, so it helps to just be able to reference “the yellow one who borrowed some gloves from Ensoku’s This is a Pen PV”. Also for anyone else who’s been there: was this photo taken at the ramen ‘museum’ (read: food court) in Yokohama?? It kinda reminds me of that spot. Doak Band As a rapidly balding dude, I appreciate when even fake-baldness gets some shine in VK. Shout-out to the dude from Codoma A! Avelcain Vocalist Karma I bow at the altar of Avelcain… and I’m on the record as loving black-suit-wearing VK looks. Add some fucking palpable *zetsubou* and a sword for no real reason!?? I’m sold. Elysion Band They get my vote for best golden age Matina cosplay of the year. I saw them in June and there was just tons of vinyl and straps and lace and bare thigh and a frilly white dress and… there’s no joke here they just had an awesome/classic look. I don’t even remember what they sounded like, but I remember thinking their outfits and makeup had to take hours to get right before the show. Lack-co. Vocalist Tenten What you thought I wasn’t going to include this transcendent “it’s coming in nice” puberty mustache dyed red?? You don’t know me very well. He’s got some sort of black sequin freckles happening too for some Annie vibes. Nihilizm Band Just a look that I think really kills. Those red lace blindfolds are just cool IDK. The member with the bob is a cutie. ギャロ Vocalist Jojo I always love Jojo’s extremely sparkly lipstick…. And in this video (and others this year) he wins the award for most dangerously low-rise pants in VK. Got them side abs! I also don’t really understand his fork hat, but fuck it if you can’t get weird in VK where can you? Close but no cigar: Hollowgram's grown up/understated black looks, vocalist from More's curls and one satyr horn, Plastic Tree vocalist pushing the bounds of how cool he can make cutting his own hair look Purposefully Omitted: The Black Swan blackface, any boring not-quite Kamijo look Let me know why I'm wrong and what should have been on this list!

We all know that VK bands breed releases like rabbits, so I've been trying to gauge out which bands are the worst serial offenders in coming out with new material and did some number crunching on some of the bands with the most extensive discographies (excluding remixes, remasters, karaoke/instrumental and re-recordings) So far I haven't been able to find a band that even comes close to being as prolific as mejibray with so much material in such short time, not even ains bands. Except maybe Grieva. MEJIBRAY years: 5.5 years unique songs: ≳102 time it takes to listen: 6.7 hours productivity rate: 19 songs per year - almost 2 full albums every year. seriously how GRIEVA years: 4.5 years unique songs: ≳76-86 (too many SEs) time it takes to listen: 4.7 hours productivity rate: 18 songs per year DIAURA years: 6 years unique songs: ≳97 time it takes to listen: 6.5 hours productivity rate: 16 songs per year / 1 album + single per year / 1 EP every 4 months Lycaon years: 7.5 years unique songs: ≳100 time it takes to listen: 5.8 hours productivity rate: 13 songs / 1 album per year KIRYU years: 9 years unique songs: ≳113 time it takes to listen: 7.3 hours productivity rate: 12 songs / 1 album per year DEZERT years: 5 years unique songs: ≳60 time it takes to listen: 3.5 hours productivity rate: 12 songs / 1 album per year girugamesh years: 12 unique songs: ≳130 time it takes to listen: 7.8 hours productivity rate: 11 songs / 1 album per year AWOI years: 9.5 years unique songs: ≳85 time it takes to listen: 5.7 hours productivity rate: 9 songs / 1 album + 1 EP every alternating year list is short because filtering out duplicates is hard. It would also be interesting to see how well some of the longer-tenured bands do on this list.

Dir en Grey is one of the most well know japanese bands in the world, you can meet someone that doesn´t like japanese music at all, but they like Dir en Grey, it happens to me all the time... Today they are know for they experimental extreme metal songs, but, one day they where just a visual kei band doing they "true" things you know, for some is hard to believe that it is the same band. Released in 1997, MISSA is their first EP, the music was kind of similar to what they were doing in La:Sadie's, lyrical themes and etc... So, let's go! 01.霧と繭 I think that this song may be one of my favorite visual kei songs of all time(It is on my top 5 songs in my last fm chart). The song stars with a wind sound and Kyo whispering some phases and then the old school octave riffage starts with drums blasting all the way, the bass tone is just amazing in this one, love it! The solo is simple but i like it very much, it just done right. The song talk's about suicide, as Kyo means that he doesn´t need his cocoon(body) anymore. It's a fun fact, and who could imagine, that one day we could listen to a deathcore version of this song, done by the same band, but, i still preffer the original song for all it's context and epicness. Just a classic. 10/10 02.「S」 This songs starts with a frenetic bass drum kick ending the time count with the cymbals, then the guitar enters with a octave riff(i think they liked doing that a lot), the song has a, almost, danceable rhythm if you think about it, the vocal melody isn´t nothing special, don´t appeal to me too much. Overall its a nice song, just that. 7/10 03.Erode Remember that orgasmatic bass tone? aw god... I feel that this bass intro is somehow iconic to me, the guitar melody that enter to complete the intro is very nice too, i like how the first verse has a mysterious feel leading to a nice song. The lyrics are about lost love, and maybe, about suicide... just kiding. 9/10 04.蒼い月 "Akai sora, aoi tsuki..." Another classic old school Dir en Grey song, i love how this song has a odd 5/4 timing. Overall, the song is kind of repetitive, but in a good way, it doesn´t have a chorus at all, just a "Blue & Die" moment. 9/10 05.Garden Somehow, this is the most popular song in the EP, i think that because it is a upbeat song, not so "melancholic" as the other songs, it's more similar to the other upbeat visual kei songs of its time, it remembers me of my teenager years... Ah, forgot, nice song. C'mon sing along... "GARDEN sugi yuku kono kisetsu no naka de itsu made mooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" 8/10 06.秒「」深 They used to play this one a lot live, fast visual kei song uhuuuuu, headbang with your friends. Just to finish this EP in good mood, giving the feeling that they had a lot to show yet, the main riff is very nice. Ah, the song finishes with mad screaming, missed that... 8/10 This EP is undoubtedly a visual kei classic, the bass tone, the "true" feeling, classic Dir en Grey was very successful, the right band in the right time and country, no doubt this era is considered influential until today in the scene, Gri... cof cof eva... Buy this in the first chance you have! OVERALL: 8,5

Cruisin' around and talking about Emmuree's new single, Red. I said the wrong track was called 'red', but the text on screen is correct haha. Let me know what ya'll think now that you've had a chance to listen! Shoutout to @r... for spreading the Emmuree love.
  16. ギルガメッシュ Vs. D'espairsRay The similarities are there. Both bands lasted about the same amount of time Despa lasted 12 years and Giru lasted around 13, both bands experienced drastic changes in sound towards the later end of their careers, and finally both bands line-ups remained consistent with the exception of girugamesh's early vocalist change. Now the question is who is better.

  19. aas part of my attempts at teaching myself japanese, i thought i'd take an album i liked, and translate the whole thing to see how my translations compared against others'. So with the exception of two tracks, these have all been translated before, but in the chance that i may have gone with a different meaning/inflection of a phrase or such, i'll post my results here.... but please don't assume any degree of 'accuracy' to these, as 1) i don't know what the hell i'm doing and 2) i tried to prioritize readability over accuracy anyway. To keep this post from becoming enormous i'll put just the english here under spoiler tags, but if anyone wants to compare my translations against the kanji in a more readable format, i've put it all in a google doc at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xXwShjwBLSL-PE3EaFZHnl1F_O7ePT4xTaXsCefdsrg/edit?usp=sharing 01- IDEA 02- シアトリカル・ブルーブラック 03- DiefiL 04- Hungry Psychopath 05- Mr. レインは死んだふり 06- RAVEN 07- 埋葬虫 08- Contagion 09- Echo 10- hatred × tangle red × hunger red 11- 瞬間のアイディアル 12- BOWWOW 13- SUICIDAL WORD GAME 14- SERVANT 15- Cristate 16- 鳥は泳ぎ方を知らず溺れ亡骸 17- COPERNICUS Anyway there's my take on the album, hope someone thinks it's cool or something. No need to credit me or w/e since only suicidal word game & servant were 'new' translations. Definitely feel free to ask/correct anything on these though, i'm still learning ofc so any comments would be helpful, thanks~!

  22. The gallo comes back so soon with another good album this year continuing where they left and adding on to that. At first it seems like they were following the same pattern per say of their earlier album DIAVOLO, the song seemed to fit in the same parameter. Track 2 did have me for a second though because the riffage sounded really familiar. that happened more time on the album but the second guitar and jojo took care of "this is generic." However jojo's voice at some parts did seem more poppy, but not so much that it's a turn off or "he changed ." Track 6 he switches up for the better for sure and sounds so clean and right. After that track, the interest peaks with the instrumental either being different from the previous stuff (diavolo) or having more going on in it. So what to do i give it? The strongest 10? no, but nothing's wrong with the album. buy here: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/DAKEMR-15

Because there are many topics about the bad things of Vk i thought why not start a topic about everything WE love about Vk!? I've been a Vk fan for over 8 years now and still my love for Vk grows every year even more and more continuously. So to list just a few things I love about the current scene: .) the visuals > I just love the way how all these bandguys dress up - even after all the years i still find myself looking at them and thinking like how can acutal human beings look that gorgeous!?! And yea i know photshop... but still if you see them live... .) the music > like (almost) no matter what kind of genre you like you can find almost any genre played by some Vk band since they don't limit themselves to just one genre. I love the fact that more and more heavy Vk bands appear - I love the way they implement all that "core" stuff into their music whether it be the riffage the breakdowns the vocals etc. I love that within the Vk scene there are sooooo many unique sounding vocalists - I am orignially coming from the death/black metal / deathcore scene and i can't stand it anymore like every type of vocalists sounds the same and boring as hell because they all use the same techniques... in Vk most vocalists sound like they do their own thing and therefore there are much more unique voices to be heard. Also I love the way Vk musicians compose their songs - like the way that a lot of songs implement heavy verses and then going into a kinda softer/more poppier refrain just to go all out again... .) the fans > I know there are many bad things about Vk fans BUT you have to agree (especially the japanese fans) tell me one scene with a more dedicated fanbase!... like srsly there's no scene were fans are rocking more out on concerts then in Vk. .) the marketing > In the end they all do it for the money but who cares they have to live as well.. - so what I mean is they make cheki for their fangirls which I think is a pretty cool thing, they do all these instore events (although thats only a good thing if you are in japan obviously...) or all the bonuses from different shops... so this are just a few positive things which just come to my mind so you see Vk has a lot of positive things to offer so what are the things you like the most about it?
