Japanese Drama!

Recommended Posts

So, gaiz, what J-drama's are you watching or have watched? And what are your favorites?

I've watched:

  • 1 Litre of Tears
  • Akai Ito
  • At Home Dad *****
  • Atashinchi no Danshi
  • Boku to Kanojo to Kanojo no Ikiru Michi **
  • Densha Otoko
  • Gokusen (all three seasons and specials)
  • Honey and Clover **
  • Hotaru no Hikari (both seasons and special) **
  • Nagareboshi **
  • Okujou no Aru Apaato (though it's more of a special/movie) **
  • Shiroi Haru **
  • Stand Up!! **
  • Tokyo Friends
  • Yankii kun to Megane chan **

The titles with stars next to them were my favorites. At Home Dad is hands down my absolute favorite. I could watch that series any time (I've watched it through about 5 times already). Because of it I've become a fan of Abe Hiroshi

And the ones I started but haven't completed yet:

  • Galileo
  • Musashi
  • Tokyo DOGS
  • Yukan Club

I'm currently in the middle of watching My Little Chef, which so far is pretty good. It's a little slow as most of it takes place in a dark, empty restaurant (why is it always dark!?) But seeing the food they cook makes my mouth water and makes me want to learn to cook properly.

I'm not really a drama-watching person but I watched these so far:

 - Kisarazu Cat's Eye (all the series, movies, etc)

 - Tiger & Dragon

 - Gal Circle

...as you can see I like the more wacky stuff. :D KCE has to be my top favorite out of these.

Things I've watched: (And probably loads more I can't think of right now)

  • 11 Nin mo Iru!
  • Aikurushii
  • Akahana no Sensei
  • Akai Ito
  • Akihabara@deep
  • Atashinchi no Danshi
  • Bloody Monday 1 & 2*
  • Dragon Zakura
  • Gokusen 1, 2 and part of 3 because I couldn't take it anymore.
  • Hana Kimi
  • Hana Kimi 2011
  • Hana Yori Dango 1 & 2
  • Himitsu no Hanazono*
  • Koizora
  • Nobuta wo Produce
  • Ouran High School Host Club
  • Q10
  • Ryuusei no Kizuna
  • Seigi no Mikata
  • Seito Shokun!**
  • Shiritsu Bakaleya Koukou
  • SPEC ~ First Blood
  • Tokyo Dogs**
  • Tumbling*
  • Yankee-kun to Megane-chan**
  • Zeni Geba**

Some of these dramas were just incredibly fun to watch, but nothing special as a whole. Because there's so many to watch I often end up checking my favorite actors' filmographies which is the reason a lot of actors end up returning in the dramas I've watched.

Currently watching:

  • xxxHOLIC (which has just started airing)
  • Delicious Gakuin (Finally finishing this after ages)
  • Ghost Friends (Because I'm feeding my current AAA addiction and their lead singer is the lead in this drama)

Waiting for Kamiki Ryunosuke's new drama, "Kogure Shashinkan," and Hongo Kanata's new drama as well. Remake of the Chasing World movies/books. And there's loads I still need to watch/finish.

xxxHolic any good? i think i remember liking the anime...

I'm two episodes in and I like it so far. Seems like they actually got a budget compared to some other manga to drama/movie adaptions. Episode three is out but not yet subbed.

eh, kinda feel Japanese are the worst of the East Asian dramas but there's some good ones  of course that come to mind right now---

I enjoyed a lot:

hana kimi (really funny!!)

ryuusei no kizuna (good mystery, family drama)

zettai kareshi (corny but really endearing)

1litre no namida

good (but flawed):

hana yori dango (korean and taiwanese versions (and boys) are better)

hotaru no hikari (enjoyable but the actions of the characters is frustrating)

nobuta wo produce (good concept, story went nowhere)

gokusen (worth watching but repetitive! Don't go beyond season 1)

nodame cantabile (again, great start but didn't progress well for me

yamato nadeshiko shichi henge- I thought I was gonna hate this one, but enjoyed it a lot.  Silly but good message and kept me interested

- Ningen Shikkaku - tatoeba boku ga shindara (1994) [really good, a dark/high-school kind of drama, unfortunately it doesn't have subtitles for all of the 12eps yet]
- Shota no sushi (1996) [really good, I liked this one because it explains details about japanese food]

- Mukodono (2001) [nice drama about a male jpop singer]
- Densha Otoko (2005) [classic, really good]

- GTO (1998) [classic, nice high-school drama]

- My boss my hero (2006) [funny high-school/yakuza drama]

I watched Aibou while it played on TV. The TV channel basically got replaced last year, so no more TV for me.

I've watched:

1 litre of tears: couldn't get into it, was way too melodramatic for me.

Liar Game: really good. It's a psychological drama about strategy/gambling games involving incredibly large sums of money. Usually shows like this have crappy games that feel really contrived but this did a really good job of avoiding that. The crazy reveals kept me on the edge of my seat through both seasons and the movie, and the ending does a good job of explaining what happened. Music by Yasutaka Nakata as well (Perfume, Capsule, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu).

Hanzawa Naoki: good revenge drama set in Japan's crazy banking world. I didn't really like any of the characters that much though. Its the highest viewed (2nd highest?) drama of all time yet S2 still hasn't come 4 years later.

Kazoku Game (2013) : this was exceptionally good (only bad part is the music). The premise is basically a home tutor weasels his way in to a upper middle class family and fucks everything up. All the characters are really great and well developed and the acting is good too (even the Arashi member, he was particularly good which was a surprise). If you like twists, eerie uncanny valley atmosphere, suffering or anything psychological you should watch this show. I really wish there was more j-drama like this.

Okitegami Kyoko no Biboroku: couldn't get into this because the mysteries weren't that interesting to me and the acting was bad. I watched this because the book is written by Nisio Isin who I really like.

Hana Yori Dango: couldn't get into this either.

And others years ago which I can't remember.

If anyone knows any good trippy/psychological/experimental drama hit me up.
