Recommended Posts

I made a thread like this for favorite Japanese female vocalists already. So this thread is for discussion of your favorite non-Japanese female vocalists!

I'll post some of my favorites tomorrow, but until then, who are your favorites? ;]

(such strong vocals from a young woman!)

(the jazz singer, not the one from Heart!)

(So versatile. The scream she does in this song is :staru:tastic)

(fragile and not as trained as some of the others, but it somehow works perfectly with bossa nova. ps: ignore her scary cat eyes in this video)

(Restrained and awesome.)

(so "breathy" and light.)

(I know it's autotuned which I usually hate, but it's so calm and ethereal.)

Number one, for ever and for always, Anneke van Giersbergen:

E1oivrKIr-k

I've been smitten with her voice since I listened to the song Morphia's Waltz by The Gathering a decade ago. I was devastated when she left the band, but delighted to discover that shortly after leaving she went "solo." She has a voice that is suited to all genres, that is versatile, that commands attention and is equal parts powerful and understated. I can't contain my excitement when I babble about her, she is so magical.

Here is a live cover of the infamous "Jolene" with Anathema's own Danny Cavanagh. And

which I feel highlights her ability exceptionally.

&

  • Marcela Bovio (of experimental rock outfit
, symphonic metal band
& neofolk/darkwave
).
She has a typical "Spanish" voice. It's sultry, seductive and theatrical in Stream of Passion and ethereal and exotic in Elfonía and ?on. I recommend listening to either of those first.
Ihriel (of experimental/black metal band
& solo project
, wife of Ihsahn)
Her voice is out of this world, I can't describe it. It's an acquired taste. Sometimes it is heavenly, sometimes is downright unpleasant to listen to, but... I love it.
Astrid van der Veen (solo,
&
)
So, so underrated. Especially her solo material. And for such a young girl, she has such an intense voice. It gives me chills. She has a lot of talent and she should have more fans, bless her.
Silje Wergeland (now in The Gathering, once in doom/gothic metal band
)
She gets a lot of stick since she had big shoes to fill. Initially I wasn't going to listen to new music by The Gathering, but she does the band justice and is an excellent replacement for Anneke. She fits them perfectly. She has a lovely voice that is sort of soothing to the ear.
Julie Christmas (of noise-rock
& the short-lived sludge/post-metal Battle of Mice)
A sheer, raw, powerful voice completely drenched in emotion that rips into your skin and stays there like some kind of disgusting parasite you learn to love and live with symbiotically.

Others outside of the realm of metal and rock:

(!!!!!)

Tori Amos - A Sorta Fairytale

Clare Maguire - Ain't Nobody (!!!!) :wub:

Woo, this could have been so much longer (_ _) I love Siouxsie Sioux and Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac), too, but they're not exactly "favourite" status. Ji-In Cho (Krypteria), Magali Luyten (Virus IV), Dominique Persi (Stolen Babies) and the girl on Devin Townsend Project's "Ki" album. I don't know her name, though.

^ The girl on Ki is Ché Aimee. She does her own acoustic stuff aside from that.

Anneke is really all that needs to be mentioned though. Not that there aren't other great female vocalists, durrr. Gurrl just eclipses everyone.

@Chianti, I can't believe you forgot them!!!!

And thanks for your lengthy post, subliminal!

I really want to hear more from this Anneke van Giersbergen!

Would her solo project be a good place to start?

Yes, absolutely! If you want to try her solo music, I'd recommend the album "Air" first and foremost.

But since The Gathering is my second favourite band, I recommend them as well, they just might not be your cup of tea. :P Oh and!

This was really great! :wub:

I would say I just don't like the majority of modern metal bands with the lady singers. I asked my friends once for suggestions on lady metal bands and all I got was the same metal core crap I've heard a hundred times already or some Nightwish clone. I'm all for anything that is not like this.

There's honestly nothing really wrong with the Symphonic stuff, I kinda-ish like Nightwish. I can only listen to so much before I am bored and then these other Symphonic lady bands that pop up that kind of follow Nightwish style just bore me to death lol. I have trouble really listening through an entire album before I start day dreaming about sexy men.

The bands you listed though are tight, I am always for moar metal bands that don't suck or do metalcore.

aww....I actually like The Agonist. She's not one of my favorites, though =(

What was funny, was when I asked my friends for a female fronted band with no screaming, two of my friends suggested them to me and linked songs with her screaming and yelling. And they weren't even trolling me D:< I don't care if people like them, I mean I listen to some terrible ass Visual Kei bands so who am I to judge y'know? (I'm still judging everyone anyway).

Of course there's nothing wrong with Symphonic stuff as a whole. I love early Sirenia, early Tristania, early Penumbra, early Battlelore and other Symphonic/Goth Metal bands with lots of synth and female vocals. Nothing wrong with it that way, but I have no problem understanding people that get tired of that stuff.
